The ¾” U-matic video format was developed by Sony in 1971. It was one of the first video formats to contain videotape inside a cassette.
The average U-matic Tape is 20-30 years old and is quickly coming to the end of its usable life.
U-matic Tape tapes are susceptible to degradation and loss due to organic breakdown and natural demagnetizing. Once tapes begin to demagnetize, there’s no stopping it and your tapes will fade away to nothing but static.
We use top of the line Sony playback decks for our transfers to insure the highest quality product. With our experience, top notch equipment and software, we can save your U-matic Tape memories for a better viewing experience.
Both the ¾” U-matic cassette and the decks used to play them were very large in size. They provided broadcast-quality playback, even though they had trouble displaying the color red.
Many problems plague this aging format. Besides the expensive cost of ¾” decks, the oxides in the tape can fall off and clog up deck heads, requiring frequent cleaning. These tapes are also susceptible to a condition known as sticky-shed syndrome. This is where the tape begins to stick to itself, preventing playback in any deck. We are experts at resolving these issues in order to transfer your videos to digital format

Convert 3/4″ U-matic to Digital & Ensure Your Memories Live On
U-matic tapes, commonly referred to as 3/4″ U-matic or 3/4″, are distantly remembered as one the earliest video recording cassettes released onto the market in 1971. U-matic tapes are also one of the first to include the tape inside a cassette instead of in an open, reel-to-reel format, which was revolutionary for its time.
They were originally intended for consumer use, but were way too costly to become popular in that market. U-matic is essentially obsolete. As a result, transfering 3/4″ U-matic to DVD or digital files has become vital to ensure old memories and content live on.
Today, the format has largely been replaced by digital Betacam for broadcast television purposes, but many television facilities still store U-matic recorders for archival playback of footage shot in the 1970s and 80s.
Finding the proper equipment to play these tapes is getting increasingly difficult. It is best to transfer 3/4″ U-matic tapes in order to preserve your content in a more sustainable format. At Videolab Solutions, we have the resources and expertise to convert 3/4″ U-matic to digital, helping to preserve your content for future generations to come.
