What does betamax stand for in video?
Recorders discontinued August 2002; Blank cassettes discontinued March 2016. Betamax (also known as Beta, as in its logo) is a consumer-level analog-recording and cassette format of magnetic tape for video, commonly known as a video cassette recorder. It was developed by Sony and was released in Japan on May 10, 1975.
Why did the Betamax fail?

Sony also released different versions of Betamax in various countries, with Japan being their first and most sought after market
What killed Betamax?

What came before Betamax?
Here are a few other media formats that have disappeared into history. While they seem like very 1980s things, Betamax and VHS came out in 1975 and 1976, respectively. But five years before VHS, there was the U-Matic.
What existed before VHS?

Betamax was probably a bit sharper and crisper, but VHS offered longer-playing ability, which made it possible to record an entire movie on one three-hour tape.
When was the last Betamax made?
2002
Sony’s last Betamax recorder was produced in 2002, but the company will continue to produce tapes until March 2016
